Profile:

Robert Sipos-Ori was born in Melbourne, of Hungarian parentage and began studying music from age five. Robert’s formal musical training was completed at the University of Melbourne, where he received a Bachelor of Music in performance with first class honours, and a Master of Music degree in performance. He was also a Doctor in Music candidate at The University of Melbourne, and has received numerous awards and scholarships during his studies. Robert has also studied at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Robert has been a pupil of Professor Attila Nèmethy (Hungary), and Professor Ian Holtham (Australia).


Robert has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes. These include the Una Bourne Scholarship in Music and the Eric and Linda Jullyan Memorial Scholarship in Music. He was awarded the Maude Harrington Prize in Music for accompaniment and the Rosemarie Kenny Prize in Music for solo performance. Robert won the Allans Award and the Doris F. Chandler Memorial Bursary, and was also the recipient of an Australian Post Graduate Award for two consecutive years enabling him to complete his Master of Music degree under full scholarship from the Federal Government of Australia.

As a concerto soloist Robert has appeared with conductors of international repute, such as Marco Zuccarini, with whom he performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no.1. As a chamber musician, he was 2nd Prize winner in the Inaugural Percy Grainger Chamber Music Competition. Robert is also an official accompanist at the joint Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and School of Music, The University of Melbourne, and has been in demand as accompanist with local and overseas vocalists and instrumentalists.

Robert is also actively involved in music education, having taught piano performance to students under the Trinity Foundation (Trinity College) and The University of Melbourne. He has also been involved in teaching students on the Music Exchange Program with Graz University, Austria. Robert has been an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) since 2002, and has examined throughout Melbourne and Victoria, Australia.  Robert has also given numerous master classes in Australia and also in Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Piano Association, and has been invited to be on the jury of numerous piano competitions at both National and International level, most recently the 2009 Hong Kong 15th Asia Open Piano Competition at the invitation of Prof Choi Sown Le.

Robert has also received recognition for his contributions to music in Hungary. He was awarded the silver cross medal by the Order of Vitez in Budpaest, Hungary in 2000, and awarded membership to the Szent Laszlo Tarsasag in Budpaest, Hungary in 2001 for his exceptional contributions to Music.

In 2010, Robert Sipos-Ori’s first book on Bela Bartok -A Performer’s Guide to Bartok’s Ten Easy Pieces and Allegro Barbaro, was published by Lambert Academic Publications in Köln, Germany.
